I am here to help solve your pet's eye problems by providing examinations, treatments, and surgery.

I am a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist.  I obtained my veterinary degree from Cornell University in 1983.  After 4 years of post-graduate study in ophthalmology I took my board exams and became a diplomate of the American Academy of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.  I began and ran The Animal Eye Doctor clinic in Beaverton, Oregon for 24 years. I retired from that practice, but now am seeing a limited number of patients in Manzanita.

I offer eye exams and treatments, including care for chronic infections and dry eye conditions, eye tumors, poor vision, glaucoma, and diagnosis and treatment for many other conditions.  I am a skilled surgeon but no longer offer cataract surgery or other microsurgery.  I continue to offer surgery for tumors, cherry eyes, entropion and similar conditions.

Examinations

During each examination I will take a history of the problem, then after I gain the trust of your pet, I will do an exam of the front sections of the eye using a slit lamp biomicroscope. Then I will examine the back half of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve, using an indirect ophthalmoscope. If needed, I will do a test of the eye pressure, do an ulcer dye test, or a Schirmer tear test. On occasion I will do an advanced glaucoma test called gonioscopy, or a cytology of the conjunctival surface or other infectious disease testing.

Surgery

Some tumors are large or involve the tear duct, and your family veterinarian may refer you to a specialist like me to have it removed. Other surgeries that I do frequently include cherry eye surgery and entropion surgery for rolled in eyelids. Currently I perform these surgeries at the clinics of your family veterinarians.

Pre-breeding tests
CERF and OFA

As a board-certified ophthalmologist I am qualified to offer pre-breeding exams and certificates. These, formerly called CERF exams, are now administered by the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation of America).

Equine examinations

I am experienced at performing examinations and procedures on horses, either at your barn or at your veterinarian's clinic.  I can also perform corneal surgeries, as well as some specialized injections for glaucoma or chronic uveitis.
